Sweet Water Foundation

Regenerative Neighborhood Development

Sweet Water Foundation (SWF) is a community organization that practices regenerative neighborhood development. This distinct social justice model creates safe and inspiring spaces and curates healthy, intergenerational communities. SWF transforms vacant spaces and abandoned buildings into economically and ecologically productive and sustainable community assets that produce engaged youth, skilled workers, art, locally grown food, and affordable housing.

Our investment

Chicago Beyond’s $400,000 investment in Sweet Water Foundation supported the formalization of Sweet Water Academy, now known as “The Communiversity.” The program established a site for urban ecology and neighborhood development that engages young adults as Urban Ecology Apprentices. It also provides residents, educators, college students, and practitioners from other communities with an opportunity to learn from Sweet Water Foundation’s practices.

Our Philosophy

Chicago Beyond amplifies the impact of solutions driven by those closest to the issues. We aim to notice, relate, and work differently, both as a funder and as a partner to those we invest in. By consistently applying these practices, we recenter humanity in philanthropy and all that we do.
