Kindred Space LA is South Los Angeles’s only Black-owned and -operated birth center. Founded in 2018 by midwives Allegra Hill and Kimberly Durdin, the organization works to close persistent gaps in maternal health by expanding access to high-quality, culturally affirming care. In addition to direct services, Kindred Space provides training to Black and brown doulas and midwives to deliver community-based, culturally affirming care. Across their bodies of work, Kindred Space addresses maternal and infant health disparities in communities of color and other marginalized communities around the world.
Chicago Beyond’s $1 million investment supports Kindred Space LA’s efforts to expand access to care, workforce development, and culturally anchored wellness, and build a maternal health ecosystem where families can thrive. Building on seven years of success in delivering culturally grounded, high-quality matrenal healthcare, Kindred Space LA is positioned to expand perinatal services to underserved regions, strengthen the community midwifery workforce, and enhance its internal infrastructure to sustain its impact.
Chicago Beyond amplifies the impact of solutions driven by those closest to the issues. We aim to notice, relate, and work differently, both as a funder and as a partner to those we invest in. By consistently applying these practices, we recenter humanity in philanthropy and all that we do.
