Jamaa (pronounced Jah-mah) means family in Swahili, and Jamaa Birth Village envisions a world where birth is sacred, community-led, and rooted in ancestral wisdom. The organization preserves and elevates African Indigenous midwifery through care, culture, education, and advocacy, and over the past decade, they have transformed maternal health care by restoring culturally rooted, community-led birth practices in Missouri and beyond.
Chicago Beyond’s $1 million investment supports Jamaa Birth Village’s work to expand a proven, community-led model of maternal care and address the urgent crisis facing Missouri, which ranks among the worst in maternal mortality, particularly for Black women. Leveraging these funds and additional support, Jamaa Birth Village is well-positioned to expand its impact by addressing persistent barriers, including limited access to culturally grounded care, a lack of services in rural regions, and the absence of a representative maternal health workforce.
Chicago Beyond amplifies the impact of solutions driven by those closest to the issues. We aim to notice, relate, and work differently, both as a funder and as a partner to those we invest in. By consistently applying these practices, we recenter humanity in philanthropy and all that we do.
