On July 29, 2024, Chicago Beyond welcomed Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Lieutenant Governor Julianna Stratton to sign historic birth equity legislation. This groundbreaking bill, first introduced during the Governor’s 2023 State of the State address, was created to address disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes across Illinois. The legislation’s importance was further underscored in February at the future home of the Chicago South Side Birth Center, founded by Chicago Beyond’s Leader in Residence, Jeanine Valrie Logan. The new law signifies a commitment to improving birth equity in communities facing unacceptable maternal health disparities. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that all families, regardless of their background, have access to quality prenatal and postnatal care.
