Holistic Safety Impact Report

Evidence for More Urgent, Humane, and Inclusive Corrections Reform

To assess the impact of our work with correctional systems, Chicago Beyond partnered with Openfields to conduct independent research, analyze available data, and synthesize findings related to the Holistic Safety Framework. Openfields served as the external evaluator responsible for measuring the effectiveness of Chicago Beyond’s Holistic Safety initiatives.

Holistic Safety Impact Report

A 2025 report from Openfields found that the application of Chicago Beyond’s Holistic Safety Framework has begun to create positive change. By directly addressing entrenched ways of working, centering trust and humanity, and creating space for new ideas, leaders are able to improve safety in jails and prisons. Evidence of Change

Openfields’ report identified examples of positive change across Chicago Beyond’s correctional system partners, including:  
    • Healing-centered visitation:
      Fewer barriers in visitation improves the health of individuals and families over time.
    • Expanded recreation:
      Increased physical activity improves health and decreases violence.
    • Wellness:
      Access to emotional wellness programming reduces violence over time.
    • Staff supports:
      Staff champion an intentional focus on their well-being.
    • Reduced divides:
      More constructive engagement between staff and incarcerated people is foundational for reducing violence.
