The State of Birth Justice in America

Crucial Conversations to Disrupt Disparities in Health

There is a powerful movement for birth justice happening in the United States. That momentum is driven by people taking matters into their own hands to advocate, fund, share stories, and build solutions that will make a difference in the lives of Black families.

In 2024, Chicago Beyond hosted a crucial conversation on The State of Birth Justice in America, bringing together experts to shed light on the challenges faced by Black mothers and birthing people, and explore solutions to address disparities in maternal healthcare.

Those Closest to the Issues Have the Solutions

Chicago Beyond’s State of Birth Justice in America event included the voices of leaders across health, philanthropy, and media to share perspectives on pressing challenges and needed solutions to the current state of maternal health. The conversation’s panelists included:

  • Liz Dozier: Founder & CEO of Chicago Beyond
  • Jeanine Valrie Logan: Midwife, Leader in Residence at Chicago Beyond, and Founder of the Chicago South Side Birth Center
  • Sona Smith: Birth Justice Program Officer for the Ms. Foundation
