Chicago South Side Birth Center

Whole health through culturally centered care

READ FULL PRESS RELASE

The Chicago South Side Birth Center, founded by Chicago Beyond’s Leader in Residence, Jeanine Valrie Logan, will be a freestanding maternal health center that provides holistic, community-based care to mothers and families before, during, and after birth. The center will be a liberatory space that affirms the experience, identity, self-determination, and liberation of Black birthing people, their families, and communities, while also addressing the lack of supportive birthing options available to pregnant Black women and people on the South Side of Chicago.

Community-centered solutions

In Chicago, Black women have a maternal mortality rate that is nearly six times higher than white women, and there are currently few care options on Chicago’s South Side for Black mothers and children.

To address these inequities in Black maternal health, Jeanine Valrie Logan founded the Chicago South Side Birth Center. Set to open in 2025, the Chicago South Side Birth Center is a Black midwife-led, community-focused birth center that will support the delivery of approximately 225 healthy babies each year.

Further, the Chicago South Side Birth Center’s work has garnered national attention from Governor J.B. Pritzker, who proposed a $23 million statewide investment in birth equity and credited organizations like the Chicago South Side Birth Center for leading the movement for Black maternal health.
